Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory
Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory located in Duluth, Minnesota was recently awarded a grant from the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation of $10,000 to support “Raptors in the Classroom.” “Raptors in the Classroom” is a program that is free of charge to all elementary schools serving fourth grade students located within 70 miles of Duluth. “Raptors in the Classroom” provides a fun, safe and educational program that offers students the chance to explore topics about raptors (migration, adaptations and owls); introduces students to Hawk Ridge as a community resource, provides students with a positive personal experience with nature; and provides teachers with a resource for environmental study in the classroom.
In 2008, “Raptors in the Classroom” visited fifty-six schools in the area with students then invited to come to Hawk Ridge in the fall to experience the migration first hand. Seasonal averages of 94,000 raptors migrate past Hawk Ridge from mid-August through November.
The mission of Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory is to “protect birds of prey and other migratory birds in the Western Lake Superior Region through research, education and stewardship.”
