The Gunflint Trail Historical Society: Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center

The Gunflint Historical Society was awarded a grant in January 2007 by the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation in the amount of $100,000 for development of the new “Chik Wauk Museum and Nature Center.” The goal of the Gunflint Historical Society is to develop a first class museum that will tell the history of the Gunflint Trail area and create nature trails on the site’s surrounding 50 acres of land.

The museum exhibits will tell the story of the history of the area beginning with the original Native Americans, recent Chippewa, the Voyageurs, prospectors and miners, loggers and the development of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA).

The Chik-Wauk Lodge, built in the 1930s, was acquired by the United States Forest Service and will be leased to the Historical Society through a long-term lease arrangement. The Historical Society anticipates opening up the Museum to the thousands of visitors that come annually to the BWCA in 2010.
